A paradise for four-legged companions

Few places offer as much freedom and happiness to our pup as the Magdalen Islands. Remember the last time you took your companion to the beach, and the joy he felt running across the fine sand? Here, that joy is a daily occurrence. With miles of virtually deserted beaches all year round, it’s a true haven of peace for our canine friends and their masters.

In this post you will find information on:

Dog-friendly accommodations in the Islands

Some of our accommodations will be happy to welcome your companion:

  • Le 1940 - This uniquely designed home nestled in the small village of l'Étang-du-Nord, near Site de la Côte, accepts dogs and offers a warm refuge after your days of discovering the Islands.
  • Blanche de l'Ouest - Located near the Dune de l'Ouest, this house offers a charming setting for you and your dog. Although it doesn't have direct access to the beach, it's just a few steps from the magnificent dunes where you and your pitou can take a stroll.
  • Les Rochers - Set on a promontory with breathtaking views of the sea, cliffs, dunes and archipelago, this peaceful residence is surrounded by nature trails. There are several walking options nearby, perfect for exploring the surrounding area with your four-legged friend.
  • Petit hôtel de la Montagne - This charming accommodation, which accepts dogs in low season only, is located opposite a gravel road leading to Lac Solitaire and offers several walking options. After a day of adventure, you can relax with your faithful friend in the cozy comfort of this self-service design hotel.

It’s important to talk to the owners before booking your accommodation, as fees may apply and they’ll appreciate knowing more about your pet. In general, the limit is one dog or two small dogs per house, and puppies are not always allowed.

Dog-friendly beaches in the Islands

The Magdalen Islands are particularly dog-friendly. Leashed dogs are allowed on all beaches. What’s more, three beaches allow your dog to roam off-leash, as long as they are 1,500 feet from the entrance:

Your companion will be able to run free, feel the wind in his ears and maybe even cool off in the waves! If your dog swims in salt water, remember to rinse him thoroughly with fresh water afterwards. Salt water can be irritating to his skin. What’s more, your dog’s owner will appreciate not having too much sand all over his accommodation! A hose is available outside for this purpose.

Our favourite places for a walk sheltered from the wind

  • Lac Solitaire - A truly tranquil spot, ideal for short, peaceful strolls with your dog. The loop trail takes you around a small lake, surrounded by vegetation, perfect for recharging your batteries away from the hustle and bustle, this walk will let your pitou explore new scents.
  • Parc des Bucks - For a more challenging yet accessible adventure, Parc des Buck offers a network of forest trails that will delight nature lovers. With its winding paths and stunning panoramas, it's a great way to stretch your legs away from the wind. Your furry friend will love sniffing out every nook and cranny of this magnificent park.

Boutiques and souvenir shopping

In the Magdalen Islands, most stores are delighted to meet your canine companion, and some even have their own mascot! While you’re shopping for souvenirs, don’t hesitate to bring your dog along.

Stop by Maison Papier to meet Olive, the store’s charming mascot. You’ll discover the work of artists from the Magdalen Islands, while sharing a pleasant moment with your dog. At Atelier Côtier, say hello to Chip! This boutique offers a variety of art and decorative objects inspired by the sea.

Your dog will be very welcome while you explore the local treasures, so make the most of shopping with your faithful friend by your side.

Where to break bread with your dog

In the Magdalen Islands, restaurants with terraces are generally accommodating to our four-legged friends. Don’t hesitate to ask the restaurateurs if your pooch can accompany you on the terrace; here, it’s understood that your companion is part of the family! Here are a few suggestions for dog-friendly businesses:

The Magdalen Islands dog park

While the vast expanses of the Islands allow your dog to let off steam, the Fatima Dog Park is a great place to socialize. It’s the perfect place for your pooch to make new friends! You can organize meetings via the Facebook group.

Veterinary services in the Magdalen Islands

Traveling with peace of mind also means knowing that a veterinarian is available when needed. Clinique Vétérinaire de l’Archipel offers exceptional service to ensure your pet’s health. Our dedicated team is ready to help you in case of emergency or for regular care.

How do I get to the Magdalen Islands with my dog?

By car and ferry

Travelling by car can be an excellent option, especially if your pet is used to long journeys. Just remember to take regular breaks so he can stretch his legs and hydrate. Once in Souris, you can take the CTMA ferry to the Magdalen Islands.

Good news: the Madeleine II has a kennel to safely accommodate dogs during the crossing. For more information, visit the CTMA website.

Note that you can spend time with your dog outside on the upper deck, on the same level as the kennels. It’s also possible to leave him in your vehicle, but you won’t be able to visit him during the crossing. If you choose this option, don’t forget to leave water and a window ajar!

By plane

Two airlines allow you to travel with your dog:

  • Air Canada: your pet can travel in the cabin if it weighs less than 10 kg (including cage) and the cage meets the required dimensions. Larger animals must travel in the hold. Advance reservations are essential, as space for pets is limited. See details here.
  • PAL Airlines: this airline also allows pets to be carried in the cabin for small dogs, and in the hold for larger dogs. Find out more here.

We always recommend the incredible service of Club Voyages Les Îles when purchasing your plane tickets. At the same time, they can take care of confirming transportation for your four-legged friend!

Happy as a dog in a pickup box!

To complete the experience and adopt the local way of life, all you have to do is buy a pick-up truck! Here, one of the daily pleasures is to come across dogs, grinning from ear to ear, enjoying the great outdoors from the back of their master’s truck.
